Innofibre is also extremely present in bioenergy R&D. Innofibre expertise covers the entire biomass value chain, from conditioning and characterisation to process and atmospheric emission analysis. Innofibre can process a wide range of residual biomass, whether it is from forest, agricultural, algal or urban origin.

Conditioning is a crucial step for all subsequent conversion processes. Well aware of this reality, Innofibre uses a wide range of screens and grinders, for both laboratory and pilot scales. Pilot scale grinder are either hammer- or blade-operated while the pilot screen has three decks, yielding 3 different granulometric post-grinding biomass composition. Furthermore, close collaboration with an industrial partner enables Innofibre to validate all pilot scale results in an industrial setting.

A pilot scale 300 kW combustion unit is on site at Innofibre. Three specific systems are used to reduce and control atmospheric emissions: a second combustion chamber, a multicyclone filter as well as a baghouse dust collector, which can be used either individually or successively. Several sensors are present to monitor and acquire all combustion control parameters. The combustion unit is available to all clients wanting to gain knowledge on the combustion potential of various biomasses as well as their atmospheric emissions.

Air regulation is now strict and impacts all industrial sectors. In this context, Innofibre has the capability to sample emissions directly at the source or at the final exhaust. Various emissions, such as dioxins, furans, NOx, SO2 and others can be analysed according to sampling procedures required in Canada and USA (EPA). The sampling equipment is mobile and can be installed on site for sampling or R&D projects.

Innofibre’s 125 kg/h pilot scale torrefaction unit can process various biomass to biochar, which can either be used as an alternative to fossil fuels or further transformed into various biosourced materials and products.

Energy densification is also an important aspect in bioenergy. Innofibre’s briquetting unit can densify single-specie biomass or mixes of biomass and other products into high density briquette. The densification process can lead to the development of value-added products as well as reducing transportation and storage costs.

To understand the chemistry and the reactions that occur during thermochemical processes, it is important to characterize all the feedstocks and the products: raw material, ashes, emissions, bio-oil, etc. Innofibre has equipment for performing physical and chemical characterisation of the biomass and the products. The analysis are following standard test method in the industry: ASTM, ENplus, etc. The reliability of the results is ensured by an attentive and highly qualified people.
